Cancun Underwater Museum, Mexico

The Museo Subacuático de Arte located off the coast of Isla Mujeres in Mexico’s Riviera Maya, is the world’s largest underwater museum. It was formed in 2009, in the waters surrounding Cancun, Isla Mujeres and Punta Nizuc. Composed of over 500 permanent life-sized and monumental sculptures, MUSA offers incredible displays hidden 28 feet below the ocean’s surface. The museum aims to demonstrate the interaction between art and environmental science and form a part of a complex reef structure where marine life can colonise and inhabit while increasing biomass on a grand scale. All of the sculptures are fixed to the seabed and made from pH-neutral clay promoting marine growth. The total installations occupy an area of over 420sq meters of barren substrate and weigh over 200 tons. Shallow areas even allow for visitors to snorkel and view the museum from a glass bottom boat.
